STATE OF MINNESOTA
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS: Between 1854 and 1929, an
estimated 200,000 to 300,000 impoverished,
orphaned, and abandoned children were placed on
trains by the Children's Aid Society and The New
York Foundling Hospital and sent to new family
placements; and

WHEREAS: Known as Orphan Trains, this
operation facilitated the movement of  orphaned
New York children across the U.S. and Canada;
and

WHEREAS: Minnesota welcomed thousands of
infants and older children who were transported to
the state during the Orphan Train Movement Era,
with more than 3,500 children arriving from The
New York Foundling Hospital alone; and

WHEREAS: Minnesota is believed to have the
largest number of surviving Orphan Train riders of
any state; and

WHEREAS: The legacy of the Orphan Train riders
adds to the rich history of our state.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, TIM PAWLENTY,
Governor of Minnesota, do hereby proclaim
Saturday, June 19, 2010, as:

ORPHAN TRAIN RIDERS RECOGNITION DAY
in the state of Minnesota.


IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set
my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of
Minnesota to be affixed at the State Capitol this
15th day of June in the year of our Lord two
thousand and ten, and of the State the one hundred
fifty-second.
